Going by the poll we have posted on this blog, it seem there are a large number of people still without blogs. Moreover there seems to be a lack of awareness about blogs in general.

So to do justice to the poll and help people who want to learn about this new thing called blog, I will be writing on the topic blogging from now on. I don’t know how long this will run and how often I will writing about blogging in a week, but there will be at least two posts about blogging every week! So, to stay updated please subscribe to our RSS feeds by email or a reader (we’ll explain what all these mean in this series)! Also, I will write in English as there will be terms and explanations which are easier in English. If you have any difficulty however, please feel free to contact me with your questions at careysuante@gmail.com.

What is a blog?

A blog (previously known as weblog or web log) is a website consisting of entries (also known as posts) appearing in reverse chronological order, with the most recent entry appearing first. Think of it as a personal diary you write everyday.

Blogs in essence are interactive. That is to say, unlike websites (which are mostly static) they have comments sections where readers can voice their opinions and add their thoughts. They also have links to increase this interaction online.

How it all began

Before blogs came into being, there were websites. Mostly big media houses and huge companies own and control these websites. They provide all the information and on the other side the readers (you and me) well..just read!

There was no interation. It was a one-way communication. There is the seller who dishes out information and on the other side is the consumer who has no say. Never mind, say, they cannot even ask!

It was in the early 1990s that blogs came into being. And within a span of nearly 20 years now, it is huge.

The future of blogs

The future of blogs is optimistic. This new media made the internet more democratic and a two-way communication now. Now any person with a blog has a voice. He can say what he wants, the way he wants to.

It’s true that millions are now blogging, and for some, it has become their fulltime job writing blogs. Some blogs are so popular that the blogger has to not only give up his day job, but employ writers to write for his blog. In that sense, it also creates employment and jobs, and even careers. There are now at least 100 million active blogs right now.

Blogging has become so popular that to some extent it contributes to information overload and internet addiction. Blogging also made working from home and home-based workers’ lives easier and sustainable.
