The leader of Burmese military junta, senior General Than Shwe, visited India from July 25 to 29. During the visit, a wide-range of bilateral agreements was signed.

To discuss the Indo-Burma relations, the Washington, D.C.-based Voice of America (VOA) Burmese television program interviewed Nehginpao Kipgen, General Secretary of the U.S.-based Kuki International Forum, at its Washington D.C. studio on July 28, 2010.

Kipgen, who is a researcher on the rise of political conflicts in modern Burma (1947 – 2004), has written numerous analytical articles on Burma and Asia that have been widely published in five continents – Asia, Africa, Australia, Europe, and North America.

Kipgen is also a recipient of the U.S. State Department Scholarship Program.

Kipgen discussed that the Indo-Burma relationship, under the present military regime, is a short-term policy dependent on the immediate interests of both nations. Economy, checking the growing influence of China in the region, and tackling the insurgency problems in Northeast India, are the priorities of India’s foreign policy toward Burma, noted the researcher.

The taped interview was broadcasted nationwide in Burma on July 31, 2010 (local time). The discussion, which lasted about 12 minutes, is also can be watched online at VOA Television.
