It is my honor to present to you an interview with Kima of Mizohican. Inspite of his busy schedule he was kind enough to answer a few questions from me.

If you are struggling with your blogging this interview, I hope, will give you a renewed zeal and enthusiasm in your blogging.

Even if you are not, please read on to gain insight into what it takes to be one of the most prolific bloggers amongst Zo bloggers and even amongst (Northeast) Indian bloggers today.

Without further ado I present to you Kima of Mizohican in an exclusive interview!

1. Tell us a little about yourself (Where are you from? Where did you go to school? How old are you? What’s your job and how long you’ve been at it).

My name is Kima and in the Zo online world some people know me as Sandman. I use that nick not because of that Marvel character who can control sand, but because of my all time favorite mythical character – The Sandman, bringer of dreams. That is why my blog nick is “illusionaire” a term I coined from the words “illusion” and “legionnaire” to depict a soldier (dream trooper) who brings illusion, fantasy and phantasmagoria to others through his writing.

I’m currently working in a digital Advertisement agency as a copywriter, and am doing quite well professionally. I was brought up in a boarding school right from IIIrd standard, and have travelled all over India, observing people of different cultures.

2. Why did you want to become a blogger? When did you know that it was what you wanted to do?

I started blogging during first semester MBA at IIM Bangalore (2005). We had to write an assignment on the topic “Freedom” for one of our subjects called BGS (Business, Government and Society) and I got the highest marks across our batch! Beating all the toppers of the premiere Institute of India, I realized that was what I’m good at, and I never looked back since then.

Even today, none of my friends from School and Engineering College who knew me really well can believe I now “write”! Till the year 2005, writing was the least of my interest, as I was more of the party and jock (sportsperson) type. Hence this shows that one can also rediscover complete new passions at a very late stage in life.

3. If someone wants to become a blogger, how should he best prepare? What’s the best route for him?

There is absolutely nothing to prepare about blogging. Anybody can do it. My English was crap when I first started writing. It is still quite a crap today. But I have improved a lot thanks to all the criticisms I used to get. Similarly, I have never learnt Mizo my entire life and I could only speak Mizo until 5 years ago. After the blog revolution (and community websites which can also be counted as “multiple entry blogs” to a certain degree), I can now read and write Mizo very well. So my point is, you learn as you blog. Hence you don’t need to make any preparations in advance.

4. What form of marketing works best for your blog? What are the others you use?

The most important marketing strategy is to be recognized. Hence you have to take active part in the blogosphere, reading other blogs and commenting and socializing. Let other bloggers know you (aka Brand recognition). It doesn’t matter if you are known for extreme left or right ideologies. What is important is your involvement. And don’t read other blogs just for the sake of reading. Read them because you genuinely appreciate them. Let others recognize the name you use at various blogs and more importantly at blog conglomerate sites. Once you are recognized, followers and visitors come automatically.

5. What sets you apart from other bloggers out there? What’s your USP?

Well, for one, I follow a strict “no tag no meme” rule. Tagging was extremely popular a couple of years back and I had a lot of blog friends who used to tag me all the time. And although it sounded rude (or even egoistical) not accepting those tags, many of my friends understood why I don’t do tags and memes. My blog posts are usually article-based. I try to cover an entire topic completely from introduction to conclusion. Hence I feel that frivolous posts like tags and memes dilute the content of my blog.

I also update just once a week (or twice on very rare occasions) and I’ve been maintaining that for 5 years now. My regular visitors know that and the fact that I get a consistent 1000+ visit a week shows how familiar my regular visitors are with my update frequency.

6. What is the best part of being a blogger?

The best part, I guess is knowing you have the power to let your voice be heard. No longer are you restricted to being a silent voice that the rest of India cannot hear. You make a loud noise on various issues. The pen may be mightier than the sword, but in this age of internet (especially Google Search!), the keyboard is even mightier than the pen

7. What is the worst part of being a blogger?

Give me some more time on this because I cannot think of one single reason why blogging could be bad for someone… In a nutshell, I guess sometimes people reveal too much on their blogs (“TMI”, according to internet lingo) and that causes friction in their relationships with others. But overall, I cannot think of anything negative about blogging per se.

8. What is the biggest misconception people have about blogging?

Many people still think a blog is where people talk about themselves or what they had for breakfast and how much they enjoyed that dish etc. No. That is completely wrong. There is nothing wrong if you use your blog that way too, but blogging is a much more effective tool rather than just mere self-admiration. Not only do you talk about issues or spill out your opinion about a particular incident or churn out outstanding poems/prose, you also improve your writing skills tremendously.

9. What is the blogging/family/socializing balance like for bloggers in your experience?

I blog from work sometimes, and this is only because all my bosses right up to the CEO of my organization know how deep my passion is for blogging. Hence many times I stay back after office hours and I blog or scour the blogosphere for spectacular posts or new bloggers that share similar tastes with me. Earlier, I used to spend around 60% of my online time on social networking sites. Now I spend that much of time only on blogging because blogging in itself is social networking – It all depends on how you utilize it.

10. Any other advice, tips, anecdotes or any project you’re currently working on (for Zo Bloggers ) you’d like to share?

Well, there is one advice I’d like to give to new bloggers or people who want to start blogging: DON’T BE AFRAID. I have come across many people who are afraid to blog because they are afraid of the criticisms and what others may say about the quality of their writing or their opinions. Screw criticisms. It is not a bad thing. The more you are criticized, the more you will improve or grow. You cannot learn how to swim if you are afraid of getting water into your lungs. It’s a package deal. I would also like to advice the veteran bloggers to welcome new bloggers with warmth and support and constructive criticisms.

The one blog project that I am working on is, as you all know, the Zo Bloggers Directory. One reason why I started this is because I have seen others make similar directories, but no attempt had been made to welcome these new bloggers. Some were linked without even informing them! Hence I started the directory where only those who personally register are listed.

Apart from that I subscribe to over 300+ Mizo bloggers feeds, and I try to visit as many as possible every day, encouraging them to keep writing. I introduce them to other bloggers because sometimes people stop blogging when they feel they are secluded. I want more and more Zo people to come out and blog and let our voices be heard by the rest of the World. I am not bragging, but I think from the North-east, us Zo people have the biggest and most prominent presence in the blogosphere, and I would like us to maintain that.

Chiang Mai (Mizzima) – During their two-day visit to Burma, US Assistant Secretary of State,  Kurt Campbell and Undersecretary Scot Marciel met Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, National League for Democracy (NLD) Party Central Executive Committee members, ethnic leaders and senior officials of the military regime including Prime Minister Gen. Thein Sein. They left Rangoon last evening.

Mizzima interviewed two ethnic leaders from Zomi and Rakhine ethnic communities, who also met the US diplomats.

Q: How long was the meeting with the US delegates?

A: The meeting was scheduled for 1 p.m. but it was delayed and actually started at 2:30 p.m. It lasted for about one and-a half hours.

Q: How many ethnic leaders attended the meeting?

A: A total of 8 ethnic leaders, 4 US delegates and 2 from the US embassy attended the meeting. Among them were U Aye Thar Aung (Arakan League for Democracy – ALD), Nai Tun Thein (Mon National Democracy Party), Sai Saw Aung (Shan Nationalities League for Democracy – SNLD), U Shwe Ohn (Veteran Shan politician), U Myo Thant (Rohingya Organization) and U Sa Bwe Jung from Kachin state and Dr. Samontha and his wife Daw Rebecca from among the Kayan ethnics. I learnt that Daw Rebecca is not a member of any of these ethnic organizations.

Q: What issues did you raise with the US delegates?

A: We told them that we represent the ethnic people and we dislike the constitution. There are no provisions in the constitution which can guarantee ethnic rights. If you don’t believe what we are saying, here is the copy of the constitution and you can study it, we told them. They replied that they already have a copy of the constitution. The political prisoners have not yet been released till date. Political activists are being arrested. And then we told them these political prisoners, including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, U Khun Tun Oo and 1988 student leader Min Ko Naing should be released.

Q: Which provisions in the constitution did you point out to the US delegates?

A: According to Article 441, this constitution shall come into operation throughout the Union form the day the first session of the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (People’s Parliament) is convened. So this forthcoming election is to make this constitution operational, not more than that. This is our first point. Secondly, in Fundamental Principles Chapter in Article 6 (f) which states The Union’s consistent objectives are ‘enabling the Defence Services to be able to participate in the national political leadership role of the State’. And then in ‘Transitory Provisions’, under Article 445, which bars from prosecution the members of the military regime ‘in respect of any act done in the execution of their respective duties’ by the newly constituted government. And then in Article 59(d), which states the President ‘shall be acquainted with the affairs of the Union such as political, administrative, economic and military’ which means the President shall be an ex-serviceman. The worst provision in this constitution is Article 413(d), which empowers the Union President to stage a coup if necessary. We drew the attention of the US delegation to these.

Q: Did you present the issues of other ceasefire and peace groups to the US delegates?

A: We told them the junta didn’t accept any points that were presented in the National Convention by these ceasefire and peace groups. Moreover the recent war against Kokang is a warning to all other ceasefire ethnic armed groups, which are still refusing to accept the junta’s offer of transforming their armies into the junta controlled ‘Border Guard Force’ (BGF). We presented these points to US delegates.

Q: Were you satisfied with the meeting?

A: At the meeting, the US delegates did not say anything about our presentations. But they only said that this was just the beginning and they would come back again. Despite the lack of significant words spoken by them in this meeting, I am optimistic as unprecedented events are happening now. I hope for something.

Q: What did you say at the meeting with US delegates?

A: Firstly I told them we welcomed their visit but the meetings between US delegates and ethnic leaders, and the NLD cannot solve all the problems. For progress and development in politics, there must be cooperation and negotiation between the SPDC (junta), the NLD and ethnic people.

Q: What did other ethnic leaders say at the meeting?

A: U Sa Bwe Jung from Kachin State presented the nine-point negotiations between the ‘Kachin Independence Organization’ (KIO) and the SPDC including the last presentation made by KIO to the junta based on the Panlong Agreement. Some ethnic leaders from peace groups talked about their ceasefire and peace agreements with the junta and the current pressure by the regime to transform their armies into the BGF.

Nai Saw Aung from the Mon National Democracy Party and U Shwe Ohn just gave a letter to the US delegates.

Q: Were you satisfied with the meeting with US delegates?

A: I cannot say I’m pleased and satisfied with the meeting because whatsoever comes from the side of the US, the NLD and ethnic parties are trying to make concessions and accommodations. There will not be any progress in political dialogue unless there is political will from the junta’s side. The SPDC just wants to improve relations with the US and have sanctions imposed by US-led western countries lifted.

Q: Did the US delegates say anything regarding the meeting with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi?

A: A US delegate said that Daw Suu conveyed her message to us through them saying that she was glad and pleased to hear of the meeting with US delegates and ethnic leaders.

Rev Pum Za Chin President Chin Community Norway

Rev. Pum Za Chin took great efforts in preparing the concert, travelling with the Chin singers a 10-hour train journey from Stavanger to Oslo. Based in Stavanger with his family, Rev. Pum Za Chin talked to Van Biak Thang of Chinland Guardian about the concert, Chin Community in Norway and more.]

Chinland Guardian: As Chairman of Chin Community in Norway, how did you find the concert?
Rev. Pum Za Chin: We, Chin Community in Norway, took the concert was successful not only because the singers entertained enthusiastically and happily but also because of the fact that the concert was held during the youth conference where more youths could participate and enjoyed very much.

Chinland Guardian: Tell us more about this conference and other activities that took place at the conference.
Rev. Pum Za Chin: In addition to this live concert, we had an annual meeting of Norway Chin Christian Fellowship (NCCF). Likewise, the youth group called Norway Chin Christian Youth Fellowship (NCCY) of NCCF also held its biennial meeting. With the aims of promoting fellowship and understanding among the Chin youths, we had new activities such as playing football and volleyball this year. We, the Chin in Norway, plan to continue organising such activities in order to strengthen our relationship and fellowship, and to safeguard and uplift our own cultures.

Chinland Guardian: Chin communities in other countries across the globe make great efforts and get active in protecting and promoting the Chin cultures and traditions. Are there any other activities that CCN is engaged in this regard?
Rev. Pum Za Chin: As written in its consitution, Chin Community in Norway has a duty to safeguard, protect, and promote Chin cultures, customs and traditions. Especially, we are actively engaged in maintaining our own history and on special occasions, we all come out, wearing our traditional dresses, and singing and preaching in our own dialects. When we have this concert where we sing our own songs in our own language, we, the Chin who live abroad, are clearly reminded of
1) our own native language and land, and
2) our own cultures, traditions, customs and dresses.

We have not had any kind of discussion in a broader range in regards to collaborating with other Chin communities in Europe. However, Chin Community in Norway has in its constitution that we, the Chin in Norway, will continue to maintain our own language, culture and identity from one generation to another.

Chinland Guardian: Any messages to Chin Communities in other countries
Rev. Pum Za Chin: If we make a comparison among European countries where the Chin people live, I believe Norway has got the biggest Chin population. Taking all the Chin people living in Europe, we are still a few in total. Even though we are miles away from our native land, I wish all the Chin people in Europe could work together hand in hand religiously, socially and nationally in the future and that is what I would like to see it happen.
